The Fourth of July is a time to celebrate—fireworks, friends, food, and often, alcohol. While enjoying the holiday with a cold beer or cocktail is part of the tradition for many, it’s also a time when alcohol-related incidents spike, leading to serious legal and personal consequences.
At Sheeley Law, we’re committed to helping our community stay safe. We also offer free legal consultations so you can get the answers you need without any upfront cost or obligation. In the meantime, take our free legal advice to avoid accidents, DUIs and lawsuits this 4th of July:
DUI: What You Need to Know
Driving under the influence (DUI) is one of the most common—and most dangerous—offenses during the Fourth of July weekend. Rhode Island law prohibits operating a motor vehicle with a blood alcohol content (BAC) of 0.08% or higher. For drivers under 21, that limit is just 0.02%.
Penalties for a DUI in Rhode Island can include:
Thousands of dollars in fines and court costs
License suspension
Mandatory alcohol education classes
Jail time for repeat offenses or serious injuries
Even first-time offenders can face life-disrupting consequences. And, if you cause an accident while driving under the influence, the legal repercussions can be devastating. Hosting a Party? You Could Be Liable
Many people don’t realize that hosts can be held legally responsible for the actions of their guests. Under Rhode Island’s social host liability laws, if you serve alcohol to a guest who then causes a crash or injury, you could be named in a personal injury lawsuit.
To protect yourself:
Never serve alcohol to minors
Stop serving alcohol to visibly intoxicated guests
Offer non-alcoholic options and plenty of food
Arrange for designated drivers or rideshare optionsely calculate damages related to medical bills, future care, lost income, and pain and suffering.
